Description
I am lucky to be associated with the power generation industry for more than two decades and had the opportunity to work in different power plants in different hierarchies. This book is the collection of my field experience. Based on my practical experience at various power plants, I have tried to make the book very practical. A reader can feel the practical approach to the subject while looking at it. The good balance between theory and practical aspects and the use of lucid language make it easy for your readers to understand the basics. In the beginning I prepared some notes when I was preparing for the BOE exam.
Finally, those little notes have taken their current form after many additions and modifications. The book covers all the interfunctional aspects of a thermal power plant. Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 discuss some basic engineering concepts related to power plants. In Chapter 5 we discuss the chemistry of water, which is very important for a boiler. From Chapters 6 to 13, details of various types of boilers are presented, boiler auxiliary systems and boiler operation are discussed. Tubes, pipes, and pipe fittings are discussed in detail in Chapters 14 and 15. Chapters 16 through 19 describe the steam turbine, steam turbine auxiliary system, turbine operation, and generator, respectively. Commissioning and maintenance of the power plant are described in Chapters 20 and 21, respectively.
Control and instrumentation (C&I) for power plants is explained in Chapter 22. Chapter 23 describes the scope of energy conservation in a thermal power plant. The numerical or plant calculations given at the end of the chapters involve various types of calculations necessary in the daily operation of a power plant. Feedback from my readers, friends, and supporters encouraged me to broaden the scope and make this book suitable as a better reference book on thermal power generation. To make the book more useful some essential topics like PC Boiler, AFBC/CFBC Boiler, Supercritical Boiler, Combined Cycle Power Generation, Advanced Supercritical Technology (AD700), IGCC, Best Available Technology, Next Generation Technology, Capacity Selection Coal handling plants, RO plants, large capacity steam turbines, welding basics, bearings, couplings, shaft alignment, machine vibration, pumps, fans, etc. have been incorporated into this book.
About 500 self-test questions are given at the end of each chapter in total. I am personally associated with the BOE exam. I suggest BOE test takers prepare these questions which cover almost the entire BOE exam syllabus conducted by various Boiler Boards. This book will be of great use to professional engineers, job seekers, BOE examinees, and students of various engineering colleges and power plant training institutes. I will be lucky enough if this little book can satisfy the readers and this will be my little contribution to the power generation industry.
Modification and refinement is an ongoing process. I request all my readers to give their valuable comments so that the book can be more appreciated in the future. My wife, Mrs. Amita Mallick, and my son, Amitya R. Mallick, have sacrificed so much for me. Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and support. I would like to thank my colleagues, friends, and reviewers who encouraged me to write this book.
