Human Anatomy – Kenneth S. Saladin – 5th Edition

Description

Saladino’s human anatomy goes further than the descriptions of the body structure to read as a story that interweaves basic science, clinical applications, the history of medicine and the evolutionary basis of the human structure. Saladin combines this humanist perspective with Vibrant photos and art to convey the beauty and enthusiasm of the subject to beginning students News from the fifth edition New scientific information This fifth edition presents new and updated scientific content on the limitations and applications of MRI and PET explorations (chapter 1) , pseudopods and ciliopathies (chapter 2), the pathogenesis of pressure ulcers (chapter 3), causes of spontaneous abortion (chapter 4), skin grafting with atomized pulverized mother cells (chapter 5), the resurgence of poliomyelitis due to the anti-vaccination policy (chapter 14) and the newly recognized pancreatic hormone amylin (chapter 18). it also offers new functional perspectives on the biomechanics of the nails (chapter 5) and the kneecap (chapter 8), myoglobin (chapter 10), serratus posterior muscles (chapter 11), linguistic functions of the right cerebral hemisphere (chapter 15), lamellar corpuscles (Chapter 17), the trabeculae carneae and the papillary muscles of the heart (chapter 20), el bazo (chapter 22), the shape and the interfaces between the pulmonary alveoli (chapter 23), y ovogénesis y folliculogénesis (chapter 26). Chapter 21 offers new trials of Deeper Insight on gas embolism and central venous catheters. New perspectives This edition follows the lead of Grey’s Anatomy and other leading authorities in disregarding the terminology of origin and insertion for muscular insertions (for reasons explained on page 241).

The muscle tables of chapters 11 and 12 list now the muscular insertions without calling them with these increasingly obsolete terms. Muscular innervations are also simplified in these tables by citing the main cranial and spinal nerves instead of their finer branches. This edition updates many other anatomical terms and eliminates most of the eponyms according to Terminologia Anatomica. It eliminates the remaining importance of other common but erroneous beliefs, such as lactic acid as a cause of muscle fatigue (chapter 10), discredited stories such as the effects of Phineas Gage’s brain trauma (chapter 15), the supposed absence of lymphatic vessels in CNS (chapter 22) and obsolete practices such as lithotripsy for gallstones (chapter 24). New art and photography This edition has more than 90 changes in the art program ranging from fine adjustments in art and labeling to completely new figures of pseudopods (fig. 2.14), core structure (fig. 2.18) and proteasomas ( fig. 2.19c). Improvements were made in the representations of the optical radiation of the brain (fig. 17.30) and the intercalated discs of the cardiac muscle (fig. 20.14).

Color keys have been added for the huesos to all the skull art in chapter 7. In these pages you will find new and better photographs for the cerebral angiogram (fig. 1.3b), cytoskeleton dyed with fluorescence (Fig. 2.16b), the 20-week-old fetus in the uterus (fig. 4.11f), basal cell carcinoma (Fig. 5.13a), people with spinal osteoporosis (Fig. 6.16c), peripheral edema (Fig. 22.2), the effect on the development of thalidomide (fig. 4.15), Radiographic anatomy of the hand (Fig. 8.5c), tobillo dissection (fig. 9.26b), vascular casts of skeletal muscle and thyroid gland (Figs. 10.13 and 21.2), histology of the lymph nodes (Fig. 22.8), the lung (fig. 23.10), the pituitary and adrenal glands (Figs. 18.3 and 18.8), and new electron micrographs of erythrocytes in a capillary (fig. 19.3c), an eosinophil (fig. 19.7), action of macrophages (fig. 22.7), gastric pits (fig. 24.12), the renal glomerulus (fig. 25.9) and seminiferous tubules (Fig. 26.4). What’s New? Saladin has added full-page illustrated summaries of the levels of skeletal muscle structure (table 10.1) and the pathways of the cranial nerves (fig. 15.24), which allows students to get away from the details and see the general picture . The expected learning outcomes for each section of the chapter are now numbered by letter (instead of vignettes) to facilitate reference or assignment by instructors, and are refuerzan con Evaluate their learning outcomes in the Studio Guide at the end of each chapter. Comments from students in their own class and emails from students around the world led Ken to rewrite several passages to save words and provide greater conceptual clarity.
